What are Duplexes?

A duplex is a type of residential building that consists of two separate living units, typically sharing a common wall or floor. Each unit has its own entrance, kitchen, and living spaces, allowing for independent living while still being part of the same structure.

Access to the duplex is usually separate for each unit, which provides privacy for the occupants. My family was able to live on the bottom floor, while I was able to rent the top floor of our house!

How I got started?

As an immigrant, my father worked in the blue-collar construction industry, and I had the opportunity to bond with him and learn every aspect of construction through his years of experience. Utilizing his expertise and contacts, along with my own goals of exploration, we were able to develop beautiful duplex homes and ADU units. I also conceived the innovative idea of helping family members increase their income by using their capital to build ADUs in their backyards, generating additional revenue.

Through the experience of converting my home into a duplex rental property and creating ADUs, I gained valuable insights into construction techniques ensuring that the new unit met both functional and aesthetic standards, how to navigate local zoning laws and align property modifications with regulatory requirements, and managing and coordinating workers allowed me to develop strong leadership and project management skills. This hands-on experience not only broadened my technical knowledge, but explore my way of learning is by doing!
